Billie Eilish shared a preview of a new song called “Happier Than Ever.” The teaser follows an Instagram post she sent last week with the caption “things are comingggg.”
In the preview, Eilish sits in a beige chair, turning around to look tiredly at the camera as a snippet of the track plays. Her words hang in the air as she sings, “When I’m away from you/I’m happier than ever,” followed by some more muted and distorted vocals and bright guitar chords. She’s sporting a new blonde-hair look, which may indicate the start of a new era for her.
The song was reportedly teased a while back in the documentary Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry, during which another short snippet of the song plays with a longer stretch of lyrics including “Wish I could explain it better/Wish it wasn’t true” after the same lyric from the new preview. CinemaBlend claims that Eilish has hinted at “Happier Than Ever” and her previous single “Therefore I Am” being part of a new album in the works. Last November, she had stated that she wrote 16 songs with her brother/producer Finneas during the COVID-19 lockdown.
Eilish released her debut album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? in 2019, featuring hits like “bad guy,” “when the party’s over” and “bury a friend.” She swept the Grammy Awards that year with her wins for ‘Best New Artist,’ ‘Song of the Year,’ ‘Album of the Year’ and ‘Record of the Year.’
Aside from “Therefore I Am,” some of the singles that she has shared since that album include “everything i wanted,” “No Time to Die” from the upcoming James Bond film of that name, “my future” and a collaboration with Rosalía called “Lo vas a olvidar,” which they wrote for HBO’s television series Euphoria. Like many artists, she was set to go on tour in 2020, but her plans were postponed due to the pandemic. One of the places she hopes to get back on the stage is at Las Vegas’ Life is Beautiful festival, which recently announced her as a headliner. With each of her new songs racking up hundreds of thousands of streams, there will be a lot of eyes and ears on her as she releases “Happier Than Ever.”
