Madonna Breaks Record For Largest Audience Ever For Stand-Alone Concert With 1.6 Million Attendees

This weekend, in Rio De Janeiro, Madonna broke the record for having performed for the largest audience ever for a stand-alone concert by any artist in history. On the Copacabana beach, 1.6 million fans gathered to see Madonna perform.

The previous record for largest audience for a standalone concert was held by the Rolling Stones for almost twenty years. The Stones played at the same venue and pulled 1.5 million people. For reference, Standalone concert means not part of festival or other event like Live Aid or Coachella (which receives roughly 1/1oth of the audience pulled by Madonna in Rio).

Upproxx listed the other recordholders, starting with Rod Stewart and Jean-Michel Jarre, holding an audience of 3.5 million people. Jorge Ben Jor coming in second at 3 million, Antonello Venditti had 1.8 million, and the super lineup of AC/DC, Pantera, Metallica, The Black Crowes, and E.S.T. with 1.6 million people in attendance.

This weekend marks Madonna’s first performance in Brazil in over 10 years as well as the final date of her Celebration tour. Fans were starving for Madonna’s electricity and came from far and wide. Copacabana Beach was turned into the world’s largest dancefloor as Madonna performed some of her biggest hits.

The artist was previously sued by fans who attended New York City concert that they claimed started later than advertised. Madonna’s attorneys filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit against her.

Back in March, Madonna teamed up with Kylie Minogue for live performances of “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head” and Gloria Gaynor’s classic hit “I Will Survive.”
