After Billie Eilish teased an upcoming song called “Happier Than Ever” yesterday, April 26, billboards have begun showing up in various cities reading “Album Out 30 July” next to a picture of Eilish with her recently dyed blonde hair. Happier Than Ever is also the name of the album, which was just announced officially following the news breaking via billboards. It’s coming out on Darkroom/Interscope Records, and a new single will drop this Thursday, April 29 at 9 a.m. PT.

She made a comment last November that she and her brother/producer Finneas had written 16 songs together during the COVID-19 lockdown, which have now all been confirmed for the album. Eilish originally told Stephen Colbert in February that she’d recorded the new album, commenting on it, “I don’t think I would’ve made the same album, or even the album at all, if it weren’t for COVID. That doesn’t mean it’s about COVID at all, it’s just that, when things are different in your life, you’re different. That’s just how it is. So, I have to thank COVID for that, and that’s about it.”
CinemaBlend‘s claim that the documentary on her called Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry had suggested “Happier Than Ever” and her last solo single “Therefore I Am” would both appear on the upcoming album has been confirmed. Another song she released during the pandemic called “my future” was given a Studio Ghibli-styled music video and will also be on the record.
Happier Than Ever will be the follow-up to her debut album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, which came out in 2019, featuring major hits like “bad guy,” “when the party’s over” and “bury a friend.” She became one of the trendiest young artists in recent memory and swept the Grammy Awards that year, winning all of the ‘Big Four’ categories, including ‘Best New Artist,’ ‘Song of the Year,’ ‘Album of the Year’ and ‘Record of the Year.’
Some other singles that she has released since that album include “everything i wanted,” upcoming James Bond film theme “No Time to Die” and a collaboration with Rosalía called “Lo vas a olvidar,” which was written for HBO’s television series Euphoria. She had booked tour dates for late 2020, but her plans were postponed due to COVID-19 like so many other artists. Unable to tour, she turned to writing this sophomore album. However, she’s set to get back on the stage at Las Vegas’ Life is Beautiful festival later this year, where she was recently announced as a headliner. All of her new songs have continued the buzz that began with her initial hits, and Happier Than Ever is sure to be a major release.
Happier Than Ever is available for pre-order here, and will be available as Deluxe and Super-Deluxe box sets, as exclusive colored vinyl, as a cassette and as a CD, with a photo book option as well. More information is available on Billie Eilish’s website.
