According to Stereogum, Weezer had covered Fall Out Boy’s hit song “Sugar, We’re Going Down” at their New York City show after someone from the FOB team tested positive for COVID-19 despite all band and team members being “fully vaccinated.” The show is the sixth stop of the bands’ co-headlining “Hella Mega Tour” with rock band Green Day.

Hours before the bands took the stage at Citi Field in New York City, Fall Out Boy took to Instagram to reveal the sad news that they would not be performing at the NYC and Boston stops of the tour after an unnamed member of their team tested positive for COVID. The post also highlighted how every band has “operated in a bubble independently to safeguard everyone as much as possible at each show and in between shows.” Therefore, Weezer and Green Day were still able to perform.
Closer to the end of Weezer’s set, frontman Rivers Cuomo performed what seemed to be an impromptu cover of FOB’s “Sugar, We’re Going Down” to honor his tourmates. Cuomo simply sang the song as he solemnly played the electric guitar. The crowd soon followed along and sang the lyrics with him. The tour’s opening act, American ska punk band The Interrupters, also performed their own rendition of the song in tribute as well.
Fall Out Boy is expected to appear on stage and perform starting on August 8 in Washington D.C. at Nationals Park. The “Hella Mega Tour” is scheduled to go through early September.
