Kurt Vile recently covered John Prine’s “Speed of the Sound of Loneliness” during his latest appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers on November 26. This song was originally feature on the late Prine’s ninth studio album German Afternoons, which came out in 1986.
Vile’s take on “Speed of the Sound of Loneliness” is relatively stripped back and simple, with the musician strumming away by himself on an acoustic guitar. His vocals emulate a country drawl and style, giving the track an intimate touch, alongside some humble guitar chords that perfectly capture Prine’s spirit.
This isn’t the only Prine cover Vile has done this year, back in May he covered “Sam Stone” during the Love for Philly live stream, which preceded the release of his “How Lucky” duet alongside the legendary singer-songwriter. Vile has more recently appeared on the Team Joe Sings Benefit Concert, which also held appearances from Colin Meloy and Moon Taxi.
Prine’s passing has led to a number of tributes from artists such as Lucius, Roger Waters, Sarah and Sean Watkins, John Darnielle of Mountain Goats and Grace Potter. The likes of Dan Auerbach, Brandi Carlile, Sturgill Simpson, Margo Price and Bonnie Raitt gave tribute to the icon on Picture Show: A John Prine Tribute live stream.
In other Prine related news, the country world was in uproar following the Country Music Association’s snub of the legendary performer. Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires left the association over this snub while Simpson and Price publicly criticized the CMA’s.
