Young Thug’s trial for alleged racketeering and alleged gang conspiracy (RICO) has been going on for 18 months now, which Pitchfork reports is the already the longest criminal trial in Georgia history. Today, Judge Ural Glanville announced that the trial has been paused indefinitely due to allegations of misconduct against him.
Regarding the accusations in question, defense attorneys claim that Glanville allegedly held a meeting with the trial’s prosecutors and with key witness, Kenneth Copeland. The alleged purpose of the meeting was to allegedly pressure Copeland to testify after he initially refused, which the defense attorneys argue was both improper and unconstitutional. (via Pitchfork)
Glanville has since referred recusal motions to another judge, and the trial is now paused while awaiting the decision on whether or not Glanville will be overseeing the trial moving forward.
This is far from the first time that the trial has been paused. The trial didn’t even officially begin until November of last year, following a jury selection process that took ten months. Then, just two weeks later, the trial was halted due to Young Thug’s codefendant allegedly being stabbed while in jail. The trial continued again in January after three weeks. The, back in June, Copeland was arrested for allegedly refusing to testify, with Young Thug’s lawyer was arrested just days after for allegedly accusing Glanville of witness intimidation.
