Rising hyper-pop artist Sophie Powers has returned with a brand new single “M.I.A.” Lyrically, the singer’s new track traces her complex relationship with viral internet fame and increased prevalence online following her American Idol audition last year. The song was produced by Mike Gonek and written alongside Cameron Hunter and Dyson who has previously worked with the likes of K-pop legends BTS and girl group ITZY.
Speaking on the inspiration behind the song, Powers offered, “I am addicted to the dopamine and serotonin release from being a social media persona/artist. It’s not that Gen Z doesn’t care; it’s that we don’t have the energy anymore. We suffer from constant anxiety, driven by overstimulation that has seeped into every aspect of our lives. Personally, I’ve struggled coming to terms with the fact that as much as I hate technology and want to turn it all off, I depend on it. As much as I want to be present and “missing in action” from my technological devices, I need them. I miss them when I am not using them. It’s a slippery slope, but one that I think we need to be more honest with ourselves about.”
Powers has been collaborating with artists all over the musical spectrum from Dillon Francis on “Don’t Waste My Time,” RJ Pasin on “XO,” K-pop group Illit on “Jellyous,” Lexie Liu on “Klepto” and Grimes on a DJ edit of “Obsessed.” She also previously worked with Baby Tate, kets4eki, VANA and Ashley Sienna.
