Today, Son Lux , the project of Ryan Lott, Rafiq Bhatia and Ian Chang, has shared “No God Like A King,” which is the third single from their forthcoming album, Out Into, that will be out on September 18, through This Is Meru/City Slang. Following “Want You To Love,” “No God Like A King” brims with a seething energy belied by its sludgy, screwed sonics. A one-take performance by the band was stretched and slowed to form the core of this song about hypocrisy in America, closing the album with a distinct fearlessness. It is a sound like nothing Son Lux  has made before and yet could only have come from them.

“We’re all fans of hip-hop and the boom-bap era in particular,” drummer Ian Chang says. “Stuff that has that gridded-but-not-gridded kind of feel. With our love for liquidy beats, we’ve always been drawn to the humanity in it. And with AI changing the music industry so much, we’re interested in making stuff where you hear the hand.” Across nearly two decades, Son Lux have earned their reputation for splendor and sweep, but Out Into is something different: a punchy suite of tactile, detail-minded songs born from dazzling moments of collective improvisation.

It is the most rhythmically sumptuous and lyrically urgent Son Lux album yet. “We’re going places we’ve never gone before in terms of energy, attitude, color,” Lott says. “And it all comes from having reverence for those initial sparks, for treating the voice memo version of the idea as the most sacred iteration.”
