Regular TikTok users know it for a while now, but Paramore’s pop punk classic “Missery Business” and “good 4 u” by Disney pop sensation Olivia Rodrigo, share quite a similarity. So much though that a clever user seamlessly mixed them together. The mashup then went viral on the app as pop-punk fans and emos used the sounds through out their short video clips.
Today, the writers of the emo classic, Hayley Williams and her former bandmate Josh Farro officially received writing credit for the teen star’s hit sing “good 4 u.” The news were announced via and Instagram story by Warner Chappell Music, saying, “Huge shoutout to our writers Hayley Williams and Joshua Farro.” Williams later shared the post with the comment, “Our publisher is wildin’ rn.”
The writing credit for the song was already updated at ASCAP. According to Rolling Stone, even before the official release of “good 4 u,” both teams were already in contact with each other. This isn’t the first time Rodrigo updated the writing credit for one of her sour tracks. In July, she shared ther writer’s credit with another popular singer, Taylor Swift. Rodrigo official acknowledged Swift’s somg “Cruel Summer” influenced her track “deja vu.” With the updated writers credit, “Cruel Summer” writers St. Vincent and Jack Antonoff are now listed as co-writers of Rodrigo’s song.
In June, Hole front woman and grunge icon Courtney Love claimed that Rodrigo stole the cover art for her concert film sour prom from the band classic album Live Through This. Love then asked for an apology note and some flowers for the alleged stolen “original idea.”
Just yesterday, the teen pop star shared her official chaotic music video for “brutal,” another hit single off her debut album. Both song and video highlight some of the hardships of being a teen in a digital and exploitive era, created by social media.
Paramore announced their plans to record a new album in February this year.
