Tricky has announced a new album, Different When It’s Silent, set for release on July 17 through his label False Idols, marking his 15th studio record and his first full-length under his own name in six years. The project arrives after a run of collaborative and side releases, but this time the material ultimately felt, to those around him, unmistakably like a core Tricky album.

Alongside the announcement, he has shared the first single and video, “Out Of Place.” Premiered by Lauren Laverne on BBC Radio 6 Music, the track serves as the album’s closing moment. It features longtime collaborator Marta, whose restrained vocal delivery contrasts sharply with Tricky’s more urgent, almost punk-like performance. Originally written for Marta’s own album, the song was later brought back into the fold for this record, where it now anchors the project’s final stretch with intensity.
Recorded between Tricky’s home in France and sessions in Bristol, Different When It’s Silent draws heavily from the musical environment that shaped him. Bristol singer Mitch Sanders plays a central role across the album, his falsetto weaving through much of the material and adding a soulful edge to its minimal framework. Across 14 tracks, the album blends skeletal blues, brooding electronics, distorted guitars and hip-hop rhythms, staying true to the restless experimentation that has defined Tricky’s work since Maxinquaye. As he puts it simply, “I just love making music,” a sentiment that runs through a record focused on clarity and instinct.
