According to CNN, the first day of opening statements has consisted of heated exchanges between the prosecutors and Young Thug’s defense attorney, who made a motion for a mistrial that was ultimately denied by the judge. The prosecutors have accused Thug of allegedly leading an alleged criminal street gang that allegedly committed alleged murder and alleged violent crimes in the Atlanta. Fulton County Chief Deputy District Attorney Adriane Love claims Young Slime Life are an alleged Atlanta-based street gang that is allegedly led by the rapper.
Last year the rapper and two dozen other people were charged last year under the state’s expansive Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. It is the same law Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis used to allegedly indict former President Donald Trump and 18 co defendants back in August in alleged connection with their alleged attempts to allegedly overturn the 2020 election.
Several defendants took plea deals last December while others were severed from the case. Thug is among six defendants who have pleaded not guilty to all the alleged charges and are standing trial in an Atlanta courtroom.
The alleged prosecution’s opening statements marked the start of a monthslong trial that will serve as a test of the state’s expansive RICO law, which sees the prosecutors’ highly controversial decision to use rap lyrics as evidence against the rapper. The alleged jury selection lasted nearly 10 months. The trial could allegedly feature a star-studded list of witnesses as well.
