Arnel Pineda nearly stepped away from Journey’s farewell tour before it even began, citing mounting personal and physical challenges. The longtime frontman opened up about the situation in a recent interview, shedding light on the pressures behind the scenes. Despite his efforts to withdraw, he ultimately remained committed to the tour.
Pineda revealed that he attempted multiple times to remove himself from the band’s “Final Frontier” farewell run, a major North American trek expected to extend into 2027. According to Loudwire, the singer first raised concerns as early as 2024, warning his bandmates that his personal struggles were intensifying and that he might not be able to continue.
A major factor in his decision was a difficult divorce, which he described as emotionally overwhelming and something that made him want to prioritize his family. At the same time, Pineda has been dealing with vocal issues that have made touring more physically demanding, particularly in colder climates. He explained that his body has changed over time and that performing under those conditions has become increasingly difficult.
Pineda also expressed frustration with how the tour was scheduled, claiming that he had asked to be included in discussions about timing and logistics but never received a response. Even when he directly told the band he wanted to retire, his message allegedly went unanswered, leaving him feeling unheard during a critical moment.
Despite all of this, Pineda remains the voice of Journey on the farewell tour. While he admitted feeling like “a wreck” during the process, he ultimately chose to continue, balancing his personal hardships with a sense of responsibility to the band and its legacy.
