Snoop Dogg shared that DMX had recorded his final album at Snoop Dogg’s L.A. recording studio following their Verzuz battle. The news was revealed when he spoke with famed New York City hip hop station Hot 97 about it last week following his appearance during Triller Fight Club’s Ben Askren vs. Jake Paul events.
DMX came up when one of the interviewers asked Snoop about any memorable moments the two of them had together due to their Verzuz battle. “I think after the Verzuz was our most memorable moment, because DMX likes old-school cars and I got like about 20 of them,” He began. “So one night, I’m sitting in the back and cuz jumping in the passenger seat. We’re sitting chopping it up and listening to old-school music. If you know anything about DMX, he don’t fuck with rap. We’re starting to find out we’re the same dog. We may have been separated at birth but we’re the same dog. We like the same shit.”
From there, he jumps to the news, “He actually did his whole album at my studio when we finished Verzuz. He never left, he stayed in L.A. and rented my studio out and did his whole album. I cooked for them, I laid it out for ‘em. I made it feel like ‘mi casa es su casa.’ That was the best moment, that he felt comfortable enough to do his album at my spot and he didn’t leave L.A. until it was done.”
Before his death, DMX announced plans to release the album on Def Jam Records sometime in 2021 as the eventual follow-up to his 2012 album Undisputed. A single rumored to be recorded for the album called “X Moves” released on the day of his passing, featuring Parliament/Funkadelic’s Bootsy Collins on bass, Yes’ Steve Howe on guitar and Deep Purple/Whitesnake’s Ian Paice on drums. Other features rumored for the album include members of Griselda and the late Pop Smoke.
Another posthumous song called “Been to War” was released soon after that DMX had recorded in collaboration with Swizz Beats and French Montana. It was made for the Epix series Godfather of Harlem.
Snoop Dogg reportedly won $2 million off of his bet on Paul against Askren on April 17. He, Ice Cube, E-40 and Too $hort also debuted new song during the event that they plan to release together as a new supergroup called Mount Westmore. Triller, the entertainment company behind the fight, also recently acquired the rights to Swizz Beats and Timbaland’s Verzuz series, in which similarly-themed predominately rap artists sing their hits in a fusion of rap battle and virtual concert. Snoop’s Verzuz battle with DMX saw them performing some of their classic songs back to back in the series’ typical fashion as a “Battle of the Dogs.” DMX was declared the winner in the 12-10 match.
