Hardcore punk outfit Refused are back with a new music video for “Malfire,” which will be featured on the band’s upcoming EP Malignant Fire, which is set for release in four days. This latest visual was directed by Craig Gowans.
“Malfire” serves as a commentary on social media and technology, taking place entirely through the view of a web browser navigating through a Google-like search engine and Instagram feeds. Images of protests, models and the band performing are intercut between each other, showing the dichotomy of the internet’s positive and negative attributes. The song itself is a moody punk affair, with dark brooding bassline, complemented by frontman Dennis Lyxzén’s mix of melodic and screamed vocals.
Refused have been busy this year recording songs for the upcoming video game Cyberpunk 2077, which also hosts the likes of Run The Jewels, A$AP Rocky and The New Regime. The group’s role in the game is more extensive than the other artists however, as they also portray the fictional band Samurai. Refused released “A Like Supreme” and “The Ballad of Buck Rivers” as Samurai.
This latest single follows the release of “Born On The Outs,” which came out last month. Lyxzén teamed up with Slaves on Dope, Bill Kelliher of Mastodon, Richard Patrick of Filter, Walter Schreifels of Quicksand, Daryl McDaniels of Run-D.M.C. for a cover of Faith No More’s “We Care A Lot” last month as well. The singer also teamed up with Brian Baker of Minor Threat to form the punk supergroup Fake Names in March.
