Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard dedicated a quarantine performance of the song “Such Great Heights,” by his former side project The Postal Service, to the United States Postal Service (USPS) earlier today. This performance was part of a two-song quarantine set called #TeamJoeSings, in support of Democratic Presidential Nominee Joe Biden and his running mate Kamala Harris.
“Such Great Heights” originally appeared on The Postal Service’s only studio album 2003’s Give Up. Gibbard opened up his performance of the track by explaining he supports “vote by mail,” which many feel is currently threatened by U.S. Post Master General and Republican Donor Louis DeJoy’s cost-cutting measures. His voice sings the track in his iconic tender manner, as he is accompanied by a simple folksy acoustic guitar.
“For those who are not aware, I was in a band called The Postal Service. We put out a record in 2003 and we made this music by sending CDs back and forth to each other… ” Gibbard explained. “We made a record using the United States Postal Service, therefore we called ourselves The Postal Service. I think in the midst of this global pandemic, nothing is more important than being able to vote safely and securely –and vote by mail has shown to be that over and over and over again.”
Gibbard released a single called “Proxima B” in May and “Life In Quarantine” back in March. The artist also held an extensive All Beatles-covers livestream earlier in the year. He also made an appearance at the All In WA: A Concert for COVID-19 Relief virtual benefit.
