Evanescence has shared an at-home cover of the Bananarama classic “Cruel Summer,” which was originally released as a single in 1983, before its appearance on the band’s self-titled sophomore album a year later. This at-home recording features frontwoman Amy Key on keyboards and vocals while guitarist Troy McLawhorn plays in a separate room.
The original “Cruel Summer” sounds like a 1980s pop staple, with jangly chords, a rhythmic dance beat and a deep groovy bassline, with a slightly dark undertone reflected in the bassy synths and lyrics. This latest version strips back the instrumental, with Lee turning the track into an emotional ballad, with sorrowful piano keys, and light guitar touches accentuating a powerful vocal performance by Lee.
Lee recently teamed up with Lzzy Hale for a cover of Halestorm’s “Break In” while in isolation, with both artists recording from their home studios. This video was part of We Are Hear’s “On The Air” series, where Hale serves as host on her own segment “Raise Your Horns With Lzzy Hale.”
Evanescence are still turning out music over 17 years after their breakout album Fallen. The group’s first new album in nine years The Bitter Truth is set to be released some time this year. The band debuted new song from the upcoming studio album titled “Wasted On You,” which featured a music video recorded at home in isolation by all of the band’s members. The outfit also recently rescheduled their 2020 fall Worlds Collide Tour.
