¡Cubanismo! @ Santa Monica Pier 7/23

Melodic Cuban music by ¡Cubanismo! will be the center of attention at the Santa Monica Pier on July 23. The concert is part of the Twilight Concert Series presented by public radio station KCRW. The concert is free and for all ages.

¡Cubanismo! is a 14-piece band inspired by the traditional rhythms of Cuba’s horn-driven bands of the 1950s. Born in Guanabacoa, Havana, Cuba, founding member Jesús Alemañy joined the group Sierra Maestra when he was just 16. It was Cuba’s leading contemporary ensemble and he played with the group for over a decade, recording eleven albums and touring worldwide. Alemañy moved to London in 1992, playing, learning, and networking with fellow Cubans, including percussionist Patato Valdez, for whom he helped organize a jam session, in Paris in 1994. Hannibal Records head Joe Boyd was there and was so impressed he asked Alemañy to produce a similar session in Havana. By 1998 they were firing on all cylinders.

Anyone who enjoys Latin music with a fiery rhythm and trumpet solos are sure to enjoy ¡Cubanismo! Be sure to catch them at the Santa Monica Pier in July. It’s fun for the whole family!
