Polly Jean Harvey, better known as PJ Harvey on stage, released her newest surprise after announcing her Europe tour yesterday, and a new music video last month. “Guilty” is an unreleased track that the singer-songwriter, writer, poet, and composer, decided to introduce to the public earlier today. The track was recorded while making her most recent studio LP Hope Six Demolition Project.
Opening with a heavy snare drum/tom-tom mixed beat, and slowly bringing in the vocals of Harvey, the song moves onto the chorus which brings in the guitar and other instruments, providing a real punk/bluesy feel to the track. The song continues in that structure until it comes to a close with a 30-second horn fade out. The song continuously adds to the social justice theme of her recent album, hearing Harvey repeat the lyrics “What’s he doing with that stick?” possibly hinting towards police brutality and oppression, which seems apropos for what is happening in the public.
