Luke Steele stated that “of course” he uses Artificial Intelligence in his creative process. According to Stereogum, the Empire of the Sun singer likened using AI to “a really smart guitar pedal” when asked to clarify his reportedly enthusiastic response regarding his own AI use. “It’s quite exciting, the humans versus AI, but it’s just another tool,” he said.
When questioned about how he would respond to artists who oppose AI use in the music-making process, Steele cautioned artists against such ideas and said they should “embrace it” instead. He implied that artists who didn’t would be swept up or left behind in a shifting industry tide.
“I think you gotta be careful because it’s so powerful that AI is going to empower artists that know how to use it, and they’re going to become unstoppable,” he said. “The artists that are against it have got to be careful, because it’s going to come and swallow you like a boogie monster at night.”
The interviewer followed up by mentioning concerns regarding AI’s negative environmental impacts, about which the singer elected not to comment.
