American rock band, Green Day, comes to Citi Field on August 5, supported by The Smashing Pumpkins. The band has been known as a power trio including lead vocalist and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, bassist and backing vocalist Mike Dirnt, and drummer Tré Cool.
Green Day has been credited with popularizing mainstream interest in punk rock in the U.S. with their major-label debut Dookie, a breakout success, shipping over 10 million copies nationwide. Green Day has sold roughly 75 million records worldwide and they have been nominated for 20 Grammy Awards, winning five.
Green Day’s sound is often compared to first-wave American and British punk rock bands such as the Ramones, Sex Pistols, the Clash, the Dickies, and Buzzcocks. Their genre has been classified as punk rock, skate-punk, melodic punk, and alternative rock- Green Day themselves claim they are solely a punk rock band. Armstrong says he got into punk rock music with Turn It Around! by Maximumrocknroll. Green Day also cites bands that they do not like as being influences in their work, for example, Hall & Oates, Cyndi Lauper, and other 1980s music. Different albums have had different effects on their influences as well. During the American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown era of Green Day, the band was inspired by the Who, U2, Motown albums, and musicals such as Grease.
Be sure to catch the ever so famous band, Green Day, perform at Citi Field for The Saviors Tour, celebrating 30 years of Dookie and 20 years of American Idiot! The general public sale goes live Friday Nov. 10 at 10am- ticket access is available on their website at https://greenday.com/tour.
