Jack White has been incredibly productive with his time since his 2014 album Lazaretto. From making another record with The Dead Weather, co-writing “Don’t Hurt Yourself” with Beyonce for Lemonade, helping make the roots-music documentary American Epic for PBS with T Bone Burnett and Robert Redford, opening a vinyl plant in his hometown and continuing to release records on his label Third Man all at once, there’s no doubt he’s been busy. Now, he has just revealed a teaser for his new album Boarding House Reach, according to NPR. It is a peculiar teaser, but a great teaser nonetheless of about four minutes of scattered sound bites that we can only assume are samples of songs off the album, meshed and interrupted with seconds of gaudy noise. What we do hear in-between the mess of this psycho-collage of sound, is White’s signature guitar fuzz, White’s newly tested rapping style, some old-school R&B, ragtime piano, damaged beats and oscillator balladry.
We know that he has been working on this new solo album for a while now, but there is no release date yet. We can only hope it comes early next year as a late Christmas present. White tried to explain a bit about the album at a Making Vinyl conference last month, “It’s a bizarre one. I’ve just got to let it settle. I need to listen to it by myself. I haven’t been able to listen to it by myself for a while.” Boarding House Reach is White’s third studio album. Listen to the bizarre teaser below.
