The band Satanic Planet, which includes members Lucien Greaves (The Satanic Temple co-founder and spokesperson), Luke Henshaw (Planet B, Sonido de la Frontera, First Power Crew, Variations In the Key of the Afterlife), Dave Lombardo (Slayer, Misfits, Mr. Bungle, Dead Cross), and Justin Pearson (The Locust, Swing Kids, Deaf Club), has announced their newest album for Relapse Records, titled Dead Deities, which will be released on October 30. The album is described as “a journey through modern dark music with tolling bells, blackened synth, diabolical noise interludes, drums as heavy as a mountain, and group vocals torn straight out of your best-worst nightmares.” The band’s sophomore album will be their first release since the release of their self-titled album Satanic Planet in May of 2021. The first single off of the album, titled “Sam Alito’s Mom,” was released yesterday alongside a music video. The song directly references Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, who authored a draft of the majority opinion that would ultimately overturn the landmark 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision of Roe v. Wade in 2022.
When commenting on the track, band member Lucien Greaves stated:
“In an effort to preserve reproductive rights in the face of theocratic opposition, The Satanic Temple has opened three abortion clinics and is currently working toward opening a fourth. We named the first of our clinics ‘Sam Alito’s Mom’s Satanic Abortion Clinic,’ and following the opening of the fourth clinic, we are going to sue to establish our religious freedom to ship abortion pharmaceuticals to any state in the U.S. regardless of their restrictions on bodily autonomy. This is our fight, and this is our song about that fight.”
Through the release of this album, the band will “[offer] an aggressive, pitch-black, deeply surly call-to-arms against autocracy in the age of Christian nationalism.” The album will include 11 tracks.
