Today, Julia Holter has released “Materia 2”, which is the final preview from her new album, Materia, which will be out this Friday, August 21, through Domino. Stemming from “Materia,” pivotal track on Holter’s acclaimed 2024 album Something In The Room She Moves, “Materia 2” is a hallucinatory dream of drum machine, fretless bass (Devra Hoff), and clarinet (Chris Speed), with Holter’s voice spiraling through the ether alongside that of experimental vocalist and composer Jessika Kenney. Lyrically, Holter reconsiders the connection between spirit and body, love and blood, referencing and reinventing the surreal imagery first introduced in “Materia.”
“Materia 2” follows the previously released singles “The Laugh Is In The Eyes,” “Fantasy” and “My Lost One.” The latter was named a Song You Need In Your Life by The FADER and described by the Needle Drop’s Anthony Fantano as a “blissfully, heavenly surreal experience.” Materia is Holter’s seven-track companion album to Something In The Room She Moves. The album is available to pre-order on black vinyl, packaged with a doubled sided poster/lyric sheet, on CD with lyric booklet and digitally.
