Godflesh has made the announcement that their penultimate album, Decay, is on its way. The upcoming album will be out next month on September 25th on Relapse. The upcoming album will include 6 tracks, including the one the band just released. Since this is the band’s second-to-last album, Justin Broadrick issued a statement through a press release about the band’s upcoming conclusion, as well as the process of writing and arranging songs. That statement reads, “Music, for me, is rarely complete but it has to reach a point where enough is enough. Creatively, there has to be self-discipline. One has to end it.”
Broadrick shares that Decay was made during the same studio sessions as their album Purge. About the album, he states, “It was one huge pool of songs. I picked what I felt was appropriate for what I wanted to achieve with Purge, with the intention of releasing the songs that didn’t fit as new album within a year of Purge being released. Unfortunately, two years passed whilst considering external labels, so that I didn’t have to self-release Godflesh anymore, but it took an awful lot of time to establish a comfortable home for me. The recordings were done, but as usual for me, I did change a lot of stuff once I came back to it.”
With that, Godflesh has shared the first single from Decay. The song is titled “Living/Ending”. The track is very heavy with an industrial sound. There are minimal lyrics in the song, just a few screams that compliment the dominating instrumental. The track is fairly easily digestible for a heavy instrumental song. It falls into a good groove with its leading drums. Listen to “Living/Ending” below!
The imminent end of Godflesh comes 38 years after the band was conceived, 3 years after they released their album Purge and 25 years after the band went on a hiatus that almost caused them to break up completely. The band announced the end in March, following Broadrick undergoing hernia surgery. Godflesh will have one album remaining after the release of Decay.
