Taylor Swift has blocked several Donald Trump-related TikTok accounts, including the official White House account, from using her music. She disabled the audio on a recent “Team Trump” TikTok that featured her song “august” from her 2020 album folklore. The video was captioned “I’m sure @TaylorSwift is going to be super excited we used her song!” She also disabled the audio on other videos featuring “Opalite” and “Father Figure” from her most recent studio album The Life of a Showgirl.
After re-releasing several of her albums with an added “Taylor’s Version,” the pop icon got full rights to her masters and publishing last year, which gives her greater ability than some other artists to take action against people using her songs in ways she disapproves of, as reported by Consequence. Swift has been open about her political leanings and her feelings about Trump. During the 2024 presidential election, she endorsed Kamala Harris and debunked AI-generated photos circulating on social media that purported to show her supporting Trump.
Several artists have slammed Trump-related accounts for using their music. Just last week, singer-songwriter Noah Kahan spoke out against the official White House Instagram account for using his song “American Cars. He left a comment on the video saying, “Would never approve of my music being used in support of you or this administration.” Ariana Grande, SZA and Sabrina Carpenter are among the other musicians that have condemned the White House’s use of their music for social media.
