This past Monday, July 21st, celebrity figures Shia LaBeouf and FKA Twigs have settled the ongoing sexual battery lawsuit filed against LaBeouf. The lawsuit was first made in 2020 when Twigs accused LaBeouf of alleged sexual battery, assault and infliction of emotional distress. According to Variety.com, Twigs asked the court to dismiss all claims against LaBeouf with prejudice, meaning she can’t refile the claims in the future.
The pair first met in 2018 on the set of the drama action film Honey Boy, a movie depicting the struggles of a child actor. Twigs, born as Tahliah Debrett Barnett, played the role of “Shy girl” in the movie, while LaBeouf was behind the film’s screenplay. The two soon began to date exclusively in a relationship that lasted for around 9 months. Twigs alleged that during the course of the relationship, Labeouf had choked her, knowingly gave her a sexually transmitted disease (STD), physically attacked her and even threatened to crash the car with the two in it. The couple broke up in June of 2019.
Although Labeouf has continued to deny any of the alleged charges, he made an initial statement to the New York Times saying, “I’m not in any position to tell anyone how my behavior made them feel. I have no excuses for my alcoholism or aggression, only rationalizations. I have been abusive to myself and everyone around me for years. I have a history of hurting the people closest to me. I’m ashamed of that history and am sorry to those I hurt. There is nothing else I can really say.”
Twigs’s lawyer Bryan Freedman and LaBeouf’s lawyer Shawn Holley released a statement about the settlement: “Committed to forging a constructive path forward, we have agreed to settle our case out of court. While the details of the settlement will remain private, we wish each other personal happiness, professional success and peace in the future.”
