British rock group Skunk Anansie released a new single, “Shame.” This release comes alongside the release of their new album, The Painful Truth. The single can be found on the band’s YouTube channel.
Described as the album’s “focus track,” the single features a slow, melancholic instrumental with a mix of electronic and industrial sounds. Lead singer Skin’s powerful vocal performance adds to the song’s emotional weight. In the chorus, she sings about each of her family members and what she “got” from each of them. Starting with love from her mother, she moves onto claiming she got the “pain” from her dad and “the blame” from her brother. She rounds off the chorus, recognizing “Shame, I got it bad.”
“Shame” comes as the third single released for The Painful Truth, following previous releases “Lost and Found” and “Animal.” Described as “mesmerizing, provocative, powerful and emotional,” The Painful Truth is “the sound of Skunk Anansie facing up to who they are and what they want to become. It is more than an album title, it’s a reality that they have lived through and has been greeted by rapturous reviews.” Speaking more on the album, Skin stated “When I really think about it, yes, we have made some good records in our time but it’s been a long time since we have made a great album. And that is the painful truth. Understanding that, led us to making what I genuinely think is our greatest record yet.”
The album is the band’s first release as part of the recently formed FLG records label.
