Metallica’s various social media accounts appear to have been allegedly hacked by crypto scammers. NME reports that the token was allegedly able to reach $3.37 million just twenty minutes after it was launched, then dropped down to $90k about three hours later.

This allegedly started yesterday, June 26th. According to NME, fans noticed that the band was allegedly tweeting about a Solana-based cryptocurrency, reading, “Get ready for the takeover. Tap into $METAL, a dynamic new token on the Solana blockchain poised to revolutionize how you experience events and shop online. In collaboration with @Ticketmaster.”

After this, the scammer allegedly posted details about the scheme, allegedly enticing fans with the promise of Metallica tickets, exclusive merch, even an Xbox game console that the band signed themselves. (via NME)

These tweets have since been deleted off of Metallica’s socials. While the band has made no public statement on the matter, they allegedly retweeted a statement from cryptocurrency transfer company MoonPay, stating, “MoonPay does NOT support METAL.”

Despite the chaos caused by the scammers, Metallica has been doing well during their recent performances. They have been on tour since April of last year, and they will be wrapping up Metallica’s M72 tour this September in Mexico City. Most recently, the band debuted their song, “Inamorata,” from their most recent album, 72 Seasons, live at their show in Munich.
