Following the much-anticipated main stage headline set by Blackpink at day two of Coachella 2023 weekend one, Calvin Harris had possibly an even more primetime main stage slot. Harris performed on the main stage when most other sets on the festival’s numerous other stages had concluded not beginning until an eye-opening almost midnight start time. Perched atop a mountainous video wall that served as a festival equivalent of Ayers Rock, an unspeakably huge plateau. He was also flanked on all sides and behind him the entire height of the stage by video walls. As he DJ’d from a heigh almost impossible to see his technique, he played an eighteen song set complete with cuts included from Dua Lipa, Sam Smith and Rhianna.
At the set’s finale, Harris announced he would be joined by a special guest, Ellie Goulding. Goulding appeared atop his mountainous stage riser stage left. She joined him to perform last month’s new single, “Miracle.” The pulsing rhythm and lightly rung out notes were reminiscent of ’90s house/dream techno legend Robert Miles’ “Children.” This song is the third collaboration between Harris and Goulding following their previous songs together “I Need Your Love” and “Outside.” The song’s lyrics speak of a perfect love, Goulding at one point singing “When you hold me / There’s a place I go / It’s a different high,” and then later “Are you too cynical / To believe in a miracle / That just slipped through my hands / But could you take a chance for me? / Can you forgive it all To believe in a miracle?”
