Sunflower Bean Shares Bright New Song And Video “I Don’t Have Control Sometimes”

New York-based rock band Sunflower Bean has graced their fans with a new single accompanied with a video. The New York trio, consisting of vocalist and bassist Julia Cumming, guitarist and vocalist Nick Killeen and drummer Olive Faber, released their new song “I Don’t Have Control Sometimes” ahead of their long-awaited new album Headful of Sugar, which will be released on May 6 via Lucky Number.

“I Don’t Have Control Sometimes” comes after their single “Roll the Dice” that was released last month. On this particular track, Cumming celebrates a period of recklessness and instability that brought her to the breaking point that created this powerful album. Even though the video follows a man who ends it all after ending up in a series of bad events within 2 minutes.”I Don’t Have Control Sometimes” is a jangle, bright pop song that is reminiscent of The Cure, confident in its refusal to be apologetic. Cumming sings, “I don’t care what tomorrow thinks/ Today I’m totally mine.” Her clever lyrics reflect a sense of self-awareness that eats swallows any suffering beneath.

In regards to the song’s lyrics and meaning, Cumming says, “I’ve always that my reckless side was both a gift and a curse, leading me to my best choices on stage but my worst choices in life. I don’t have control sometimes is admission, acceptance, and almost celebration of the parts of yourself that are impulsive or maybe even insane.” The new single is available to listen to below.

I'm very interested in how messages flow to audiences, small or big, and how technology influences communication over time, whether it is socially, politically, or through the workforce. Music is a big passion of mine, and I enjoy learning about new artists, new songs, and understanding how music influences society in many ways. As an intern at Mxdwn, I'm excited to be an influence to other people who have just as big of a passion for music as myself. I hope that my writings are captivating and full of great information, but I also well can't wait to learn more about the entertainment industry!
