Screaming Trees frontman, best known for his work in Queens of the Stone Age and The Gutter Twins, has died at his home in Ireland. He was 57.
Lanegan’s Screaming Trees was formed in 1985, and he fronted for them up until their 2000 breakup. During its reign, the band released hits like Sweet Oblivion‘s “Nearly Lost You” and Dust‘s “All I Know.”
“Our beloved friend Mark Lanegan passed away this morning at his home in Killarney, Ireland,” Lanegan’s representative announced in an email. “A beloved singer, songwriter, author and musician he was 57 and is survived by his wife Shelley. No other information is available at this time. The family asks everyone to respect their privacy at this time.”
More recently, Lanegan joined forces with The Icarus Line’s Joe Cardamone to form the group Dark Mark vs. Skeleton Joe, and launched an album in October. The singer also released book in December titled Devil in a Coma, in which he detailed his experiences with COVID.
While no cause of death has been released yet, Lanegan revealed in a December 2021 interview with Consequence that he dealt with intense symptoms of COVID, which led him to a three-week coma and temporary deafness. However, it’s still uncertain whether COVID was related to his death.
In the interview, Lanegan stated that he was on the mend, “[I feel] a million times better — I finally turned the corner. But it took a really long time. It was crazy. There’s some residuals. Whatever I had, it attacks places where there was trauma in the body previous times.”
The singer is survived by his wife, Shelley Brien.
