Nancy Wilson of Heart recently released a touching tribute to the late Eddie Van Halen with her new single “4 Edward.” Nancy Wilson, alongside her sister Ann, helped form the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame inducted Heart, group of which she Nancy is now veering away from as she pursues a solo career with a forthcoming album You and Me due out May 7.
“4 Edward” is a concise and poignant love letter to Eddie Van Halen. The beautiful progression and Van Halen-esque guitar plucking is topped off with a lush reverb effect that makes the entire experience feel close to the heart. The track was in fact forged through Wilson’s memory of the fleeting time she spent with Eddie. Wilson shared in a press statement, “When Heart toured with Van Halen I asked Eddie why he never played acoustic guitar, his response ‘I don’t have one.’ I gave Eddie one of mine and he immediately wrote a song on it that stole my heart. After he passed, it hit me so hard I felt it was time to pay tribute to him.”
Wilson’s debut solo album You and Me was recorded primarily in Wilson’s California home studio and saw her working with her long-time collaborators; Dan Walker on keys, Ryan Waters on guitar, bassist Andy Stoller and Ben Smith on drums. Wilson self-produced the entire project along with assistance from first engineer, Matthew Sabin. Many of the tracks on the new album are originals, but Wilson decided to include a handful of covers by a few of her favorites, including a female perspective of Pearl Jam’s “Daughter” and a stirring turn of Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Boxer.”
