Just one day after releasing Chemtrails Over The Country Club, Lana Del Rey has announced a new album, Rock Candy Sweet, which will be released on June 1. She teased the upcoming album via an Instagram post, which featured a selfie of Del Rey as she sat in her car, the words “Rock Candy Sweet” superimposed over her chest. She captioned the image with the album’s title and “June 1.”
Del Rey further elaborated as to what fans can expect on her upcoming album via her Instagram stories, with the singer writing over a screenshot of a Harper’s Bazaar opinion piece. The article discussed Del Rey’s past of cultural appropriation, with Del Rey commenting, “Just want to say thank you again for the kind articles like this one and for reminding me that my career was built on cultural appropriation and glamorizing domestic abuse. I will continue to challenge those thoughts on my next record on June 1 titled Rock Candy Sweet.”
The singer also highlighted comments from the article, which pointed out critiques from controversies of Del Rey’s past. She continued her response with, “You’re right it would have been unnecessary if no one had significantly criticized everything about the album to begin with. But you did. And I want revenge.”
Her most recent album included singles “Let Me Love You Like Woman,” the album’s title track, “Chemtrails Over the Country Club,” and “White Dress.” Singles such as “White Dress” saw Del Rey rollerskating down the barren roads of Oklahoma while singing about working as a waitress.
Chemtrails Over The Country Club saw Del Rey diving further into her themes of Americana, this time exploring middle America, rather than her usual settings of California and New York, with the occasional trip to Florida. It marked the singer’s seventh studio album, following 2019’s lauded Norman Fucking Rockwell and her 2020 poetry collection, Violet Bent Backwards Over The Grass, with its accompanying spoken-word.
