The Avalanches Team Up with The International Space Orchestra to Create Collaborative Socially Distant Video for “Wherever You Go”

Plunderphonics extraordinaires The Avalanches have teamed up with  the SETI Institute and NASA for a special lockdown performance of their newest track “Wherever You Go.” This version of the track saw the Australian group team up with The International Space Orchestra, and CLYPSO, who appeared on the original track alongside Jamie XX and Neneh Cherry.

This live version is noticeably longer than the original, while building on the originals hook with a bit more of an organic rhythmic pattern and harder hitting melodic riffs. The performance adds playful electronic instruments and elements onto the track, that contribute to its alternative dance feel. The visual shows members of the International Space Orchestra performing the songs on various traditional and makeshift instruments.

The Avalanches teamed up with SETI and NASA while preparing sounds and samples for their upcoming project, which is inspired by the sounds of space. While exploring these avenues for their music, they came across the International Space Orchestra, which formed in 2012.

“We are forever grateful to Dr. Nelly Ben Hayoun and the International Space Orchestra for a truly magical, inspiring and connective experience,” the group’s Robbie Chater and Tony DiBlasi stated in press release. “During a hard lockdown, it has renewed our faith in music, humanity and the power of connection, science and love.”

“Wherever You Go” was accompanied by the release of another single from the group’s forthcoming project “Reflecting Light.” These two songs precede their single “Running Red Lights” featuring Rivers Cuomo of Weezer and Pink Siifu, which was written in honor of the late Silver Jews frontman David Berman, who committed suicide in 2019. The first single from this upcoming album “We Will Always Love You” was recorded alongside alternative R&B performer Blood Orange.
