In the past The Regrettes have been known for their more punk/rock sound, however this new song is contrasting with their past work. “I Love Us,” has a lot of synth backing, and a bright happy sound that gives the essence of pop.
In the video there is a robot who gets unboxed by a girl, whom can be assumed as the owner of the robot. After fixing the robot up a bit the robot seems to have fallen in love with the girl. The video goes through a few of their car rides together and them dancing. Towards the latter part of the video there is a commercial for a newer robot that comes up on a television. The robot goes on another car ride with their owner and gets left at the dump. At the dump the robot finds another robot that has been thrown away and they find love in each other. The video along with the lyrics of the song alludes to how you can be so in love with someone and they don’t reciprocate the same level of feelings that one might have for the other.
As for the sound of the song the band comments on their genre-bend. Lead singer Lydia Night says, “I officially decided to let go of having any preconceived idea for what a song I’m writing needs to be like. It was me deciding to finally stop trying to stay within a box or stick to what’s comfortable genre wise and just allow myself to have fun and not stress about it being ‘cool’ or ‘rock’ enough. I’m so inspired by artists like Charli XCX, The 1975, St Vincent, Brockhampton and much more.”
Back in May the band released a different song called “What Am I Gonna Do Today?” The song was labeled as a “Quarantine Anthem” by mxdwn because of the relatability of the song.
