GoGo Penguin Makes the Dead Dance at Hollywood Forever Cemetery on 6/12

As far as anyone is concerned Classical and jazz are dead. While it may be the main style of music still studied at colleges, outside of a small group of people no one pays it any mind. And why would we, it tends to rely on antiquated modes of music that speak little to today’s audience both sonically and thematically. That is not to say that Classical or Jazz is bad, it is simply to point out that they not needed currently. But for each rule there is an exception, and in the world of music there is room for more than a handful of exceptions.

GoGo Penguin sought to turn the world of Jazz on its head from day one. While many of the best jazz musicians of today startle us with their virtuosity like Kamasi Washington, GoGo Penguin sought a different route. They blended jazzy time signatures with luxurious piano and electronic inspired breakbeats that added a touch of the modern to what was often seen as an antiquated style of music.

The rewards they have reaped for their innovation have been fittingly massive. A number of their songs have racked up millions of plays, a rare achievement for any jazz band in this day and age. Now they are being rewarded even more greatly with a chance to provide an iconic performance at a legendary venue.

Hollywood Forever Cemetery seems like it would be a bit of a bummer place to see a concert, but in reality it is a gorgeous venue. The City of Hollywood has gone to great lengths to ensure that the grounds are well kept and maintained. In addition to the upkeep, the city regularly hosts events betwixt the burial mounds, whether they be concerts or movie screenings, families and friends come to bask in the atmosphere of the cemetery, which is more reverent than unsettling. GoGo Penguin is sure to put on a great show that perfectly blends with the setting, so be sure to make room for this one on your schedule.
