The Strokes Announce New Album in 2020, Play New Song “Ode To The Mets” at NYE 2019 Show

Influential garage rock band The Strokes have announced a new album for 2020, and unveiled a new song during their New Year’s Eve performance at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. The new track titled “Ode To The Mets,” is a somber, and more laid back song that recalls the band’s sophomore album Room On Fire, released back in 2003.

The band’s most recent album Comedown Machine came out in 2013, and served as one of the band’s final records for RCA. This album was given almost no promotion by the band, and came during a media blackout, while the album cover itself was designed to look like an old RCA tape reel box. The band released a short EP titled Future Past Present a few years later which took a similar synth-pop and even vaporwave inspired theme throughout its tracks.

“Yeah, we’ve got a new album coming out soon,” frontman Julian Casablancas told the crowd according to Spin. “2020, here we come. The 2010s, whatever the fuck they’re called, we took ‘em off. And now we’ve been unfrozen and we’re back.”

The group was also joined by their opener Mac DeMarco, who is a collaborator with The Voidz, another project fronted by Julian Casablancas for a performance of “Modern Girls & Old Fashion Men.”

The Strokes will be having several high-profile headlining sets across various music festivals in the United States and abroad this year. This includes a set at the Shaky Knees Music festival, alongside the likes of The Black Keys, The Smashing Pumpkins and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, set at Tecate P’al Norte alongside Tame Impala and Foster The People, and Lollapalooza Chile and Brasil, alongside the likes of Travis Scott, Guns N’ Roses and Lana Del Rey.
