Catch Stormzy at Theatre of Living Arts on June 5

Stormzy is one of the top artists and rappers in the UK coming out of the grime scene — grime is a type of music that originated in London in the early 2000’s. It combines styles such as UK garage, trap music, ragga, hip-hop, and even dubstep. It is characterized by its high tempo and jagged sound, with these beats usually being rapped over by an English rapper. Stormzy began to draw attention to himself in the underground grime scene with his unique style and flair, as well as his pure talent and rapping ability. Stormzy initially released his music on YouTube, and was launched into the mainstream when he posted his breakout hit ‘Shut up’ on the platform. Posted in 2015, the video now has nearly 100 million views. Stormzy is one of the most popular artists in the genre and for good reason, accumulating millions of loyal and dedicated fans in such a short amount of time.

After a year-long hiatus, Stomrzy resurfaced in 2017 via billboard campaigns across London displaying the hashtag #GSAP 24.02. This pointed to his next album, ‘Gang Signs & Prayer’. The album was an instant success, debuting at number on the UK albums chart. Since then, he has gone on to headline at the Glastonbury Festival, break into the political scene, and reach number one on the singles chart twice. He just released his newest album, ‘Heavy is the Head’ three days ago on December 13. The album is blowing up, amassing millions of streams, and it includes his major hits, ‘Shut Up’ and ‘Vossi Bop’. This is his second album and it is littered with gems that show why Stormzy is at the top of the game. He will be coming to the Theatre of Living Arts, a small and intimate venue where you will get the opportunity to see and listen to such an established and wildly popular UK grime artist up close.
