Pussy Riot is Bringing Punk, and a Message, to Union Transfer April 3

Pussy Riot is where music meets politics. This group has essentially functioned as a protest punk rock group hailing from Moscow, Russia. They advocate for things like feminism, LGBT rights, and opposition to Vladimir Putin, who they consider to be a dictator. Since its founding in 2011, Pussy Riot has seen 11 women come through the band as members. The group has staged many unauthorized, provocative public performances including one inside Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Savior. This controversial performance was seen as “sacrilegious” and was eventually stopped by officials. 3 group members were arrested and each was given a 2 year sentence under “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred”. This is when Pussy Riot gained global notoriety and exposure. Since this, they have gone on to stage performances at the 2014 Sochi Winter Games, the 2018 FIFA World Cup, and many more.

The group describes their concerts as “performance art”. One trip to their Spotify or Apple Music page and you’ll immediately get a feel for their style. They aren’t the most musically gifted, but they have a clear message to get across. The group’s trademark is their brightly colored balaclavas which enhance their ‘guerrilla’ look. Whether you are a fan of their music or not, they definitely know how to put on a show and spark some controversy. They are embarking on a nation-wide tour starting in March of 2020. They will be coming through to Philly on April 3 and will be performing at the Union Transfer. With this smaller setting, it is a great chance to get an up close and personal look at this notorious group. This is definitely a concert to go to if you’re looking to let off a little steam as well. The show is at 8:30.
