Lars Ulrich of Metallica Surprises Juanes at Latin GRAMMY Awards to Present Person of the Year Award

The 2020 Latin Grammy’s took place this past Thursday night, and fans in attendance were shocked when Lars Ulrich of Metallica surprise the longtime Latin Grammy darling Juanes during his acceptance speech at the end of the night. Columbian rock star Juanes had one hell of a night, he kicked the show off by performing some of his biggest hits taking fans through the different chapters of his career. He started it off by performing his 2000’s hit that started it all, “Fíjate Bien.” He then followed with his international 2002 breakthrough, “A Díos Le Pido,” followed by his 2005 cumbia-rock superhit, “La Camisa Negra.”

He also managed to pepper in a few of his hits from this last year, Canadian by birth and Italian by heritage. He was then joined on stage by R&B singer Alessia Cara to preform their iconic cross-cultural collaboration, ““Querer Mejor.”  But the party didnt stop there, the Colombian pop prince Sebastián Yatra then slinked into the foreground to perform their joint pop-reggaeton number, “Bonita.”

Not only did Juanes steal the show with his heat stopping performances but he was honored as Person of the Year during the ceremony. But this years Person of the Year award was far from usual, after  closing out his procession of hits, he was surprised by a longtime hero from the anglophone world, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich. But it wasn’t the killer performances and Person of the Year award that captivated the night, it was Lars Ulrich surprising Juanes at his acceptance speech for the Person of the Year award.

Lars had this to say about Juanes, “I met Juanes years ago, after performing in Mexico,” Ulrich said in English. “And I have keenly watched his music, his creativity and his radiant humanity soar across this beautiful planet. Then I learned he was a Metallica fan… Now tonight, we come full circle. I proclaim myself a Juanes fan! Mi amigo, mi parcero, I’m proud to recognize you as Person of the Year from the Latin Recording Academy!”
