If you love music that makes you feel something deep in your soul, Trampled By Turtles have a new release worth adding to your playlist. The Duluth, Minnesota-based folk-bluegrass band released “Wild Winds” on October 23, a brand-new song written exclusively for Season 2 of Apple Original animated series The Sisters Grimm. And while the track was created for a fictional story, its themes of grief, family, and holding on to love make it feel incredibly personal.
“Wild Winds” plays an important role in that journey. It was the missing parents’ favorite song, one they would sing to their daughters, and its melody returns throughout the series as a reminder of the family’s connection. According to Simonett, the song was inspired by the idea of experiencing freedom and exploring the world, from wandering through fields and forests to breathing in the ocean air. But those experiences ultimately mean very little without someone to share them with. Written by frontman Dave Simonett, “Wild Winds” brings the band’s signature acoustic sound to a story centered on two sisters trying to make sense of their parents’ mysterious disappearance. The song serves as an emotional thread throughout the series, connecting the sisters to their parents through a melody they grew up hearing.

The Sisters Grimm showrunner Amy Higgins shared that she discovered Trampled By Turtles during a period of profound grief after losing both of her parents. Her husband introduced her to the band’s song “Alone,” and she described being deeply moved by the emotional power of Simonett’s voice. That experience helped shape the kind of feeling she wanted audiences to experience while watching the series: the sadness of losing someone important, alongside the comfort of knowing that love and memories remain. Higgins said she hears that same emotional quality in “Wild Winds,” explaining that even its opening notes bring her to tears.
For anyone unfamiliar with Trampled By Turtles, the band has built a devoted following by blending bluegrass, folk, and rock influences into a sound that’s both energetic and emotionally rich. The group originally came together in 2003 as a side project for Simonett after thieves stole much of his musical equipment while he was playing a show with his previous band. Left with little more than an acoustic guitar, he began putting together a new group inspired by genres that didn’t require amplified instrumental work.
That’s part of what makes this release stand out. Music written for film and television can sometimes feel separate from an artist’s main body of work, but “Wild Winds” is rooted in the same emotional honesty that has helped Trampled By Turtles connect with listeners over the years. Whether you’re already a fan of the band or discovering them through The Sisters Grimm, the track is a beautiful reminder that even when people are gone, the love they leave behind can continue to shape our lives.
