An Evening of Acoustic Piano and Guitar with Jason Lytle on 12/8 @ The Lodge Room

One of the many (many, many, many, many) nice things about living in Los Angeles is being able to see bands that once ruled their genre playing at your local venue. In some ways it’s futile to try and quantify the reach of any band when it comes to influence, even Bach isn’t done influencing people just yet, but it wouldn’t be too much of a reach to say that Grandaddy, and by extension Jason Lytle, pushed indie rock into a weird, experimental space that allowed it to flourish into the era defining force of the 2000’s that it became.

Since the dissolution of Grandaddy and its eventual reunion, Lytle hasn’t just been sitting on his hands. He’s released three albums, including a collaboration put on by Arthur King titled NYLONANDJUNO which we reviewed here at mxdwn. His latest effort was the release of “The Chickadees of Highway 3” as part of the book Stories for Ways and Means.

Events like this are always special, not just because they are literally called special events, but because they present the opportunity for both artist and audience member to revel in the experience and experimentation of the moment. Walking into this venue, I can’t promise you what to expect beyond a great time, and similarly Lytle doesn’t entirely know what audience he’ll be walking into, but that’s part of what makes this so special.

It’s not everyday that you get to see living legends up close doing something out of the ordinary. The Lodge Room is just the type of venue that Grandaddy would have played when they were rising to prominence and now its the type of venue that Lytle is playing long after having reached legend status. In a way this is his home turf, and there’s almost no chance that this exact show will ever come through town again.
