On July 18 the Hammer Museum will host an evening of music in partnership with local radio station KCRW. Siblings Natalie and Elliot Bergman of Wild Belle will headline, with house KCRW DJ’s Aaron Byrd and Scott Dallavo playing sets throughout the night. This free event will take place in the museums courtyard, with cash bars and food trucks to accompany the live music.
In 2013 Wild Belle released their debut Isles on Columbia Records, but the brother sister duo had been in musical collaboration since 2006 – Natalie joining Elliot on tour as a back-up member to his then Afrobeat fusion band NOMO. Wild Belle’s influences are a continuation of those that informed the music of NOMO, finding inspiration in Reggae, Soul and the contemporary music scene of the mid to late 2000’s.
The music of Wild Belle gained early fans within the entertainment industry, with many of their songs featuring on television shows and movies, on the back of this recognition by America’s media, the duo toured the world gaining popularity on a global scale. Following Isles (2013), Wild Belle released Dreamland (2016) and Everybody One of a Kind (2019) on their own record label.
Growing up in a musical family, the pair have been influenced by and gained an experiential understanding of wide-ranging sources and genres of music. Their sound although somewhat specific in its sonic offerings, is infused with a knowledge of more than the sum of its parts, succeeding in its authenticity through the filter that Natalie and Elliot have passed their musical experience through, both practical and historical.
