EDM legend Amon Tobin is back with a new name, Only Child Tyrant, and a new track to go along with it, according to a press release sent to mxdwn. Tobin, who has gone under previous aliases before, the most recent being Two Fingers, as reported by mxdwn previously, has had quite busy year between a new album, Fear in a Handful of Dust, in April, the aforementioned Two Fingers project and now the rebirth as Only Child Tyrant.
The Only Child Tyrant album will be called Time to Run and will be released on July 26th. The first single, “Monkey Box,” will be released on June 4th, but mxdwn got a special preview thanks to a press release sent to us earlier this week. Per the email sent to mxdwn, Only Child Tyrant is described as “the Artful Dodger of Post-rock meets beats,” and the project was inspired by listening to his uncle’s collection of rock music and “stealing his brother’s 90’s mixtapes.”
Clocking in at just under three minutes, “Monkey Box” starts off with a simple, guitar riff, very reminiscent of the surf music era riffs in the 60s, inspired by those of the Beach Boys, and other bands, before a hard drumline kicks in, and the riff gets distorted. This continues until around two minutes in, where there is a slight drop, and things get trippier for a few seconds until the drums and the riff come back in.
The 90s influence is easily seen, calling to mind the resurgence of surf music that happened during the decade. The rock influence is seen in the heavy repetitive drum beat and the distortion in the song. The song loops the same beat over and over, which is par for the course for most EDM songs, but it is good.
No matter what name Tobin comes back with, he is always sure to make great tracks. His rebirth as Only Child Tyrant is teeming with potential, starting off strong with “Monkey Box” and is sure to be a great era. Be sure to grab “Monkey Box” when it drops on June 4th, and Time to Run when it drops on July 26th.
