Hozier with Japanese Breakfast and Killiam Shakespeare at BB&T Pavilion 7/26

Hailing from Dublin, Ireland, Hozier has been a global sensation since the release of his first EP, “Take Me to Church,” in 2013. After significant hiatus, Hozier finally released an EP, Nina Cried Power in 2018, followed shortly after by an album, Wasteland Baby! in 2019. The song “Nina Cried Power,” is an incredibly relevant, much needed nod to music’s civil rights activists, particularly Nina Simone, and features the legendary Mavis Staples. Ever since “Take Me to Church,” Hozier has been known for his powerful music videos that take on today’s most pertinent issues. The video for “Nina Cried Power” is no different, showing close ups of different people listening to the song for the first time, and I dare you not to cry. “Nina” is accompanied by what I think are some of Hozier’s best songs yet. Listen to “Would That I,” “Shrike,” “NFWMB,” and “Moment’s Silence (Common Tongue).”

Hozier is, without a doubt, one of the best artists I’ve ever seen perform live. It is very rare that you find an artist that sounds even better live than they do professionally recorded and mixed. Watching Hozier and his band of incredible musicians perform is a shining example of music operating at its best–where you feel reconnected with it as an organic artform. It’s absolute poetry. And you better hope and pray that he plays his cover of “Say My Name” by Destiny’s Child (yes, you read that right). When he performed it at the Fillmore before it was released on Spotify I almost disintegrated into thin air.
