Weezer, riding high on the success of last year’s cover of Toto’s “Africa” performed in the post sundown hours on Coachella’s illustrious main stage. Amidst a bevy of their own career-spanning staples the band surprised the crowd with something likely nobody expected. In line with their recent cover album Weezer (affectionately titled The Teal Album) they started a cover of the legendary ’90s TLC pop hit “No Scrubs.” As lead singer guitarist Rivers Cuomo started chopping through the song’s kiss-off lines a female voice started singing along. The band played it as if they didn’t know what was happening but then Chili appeared stage left as the mystery singer.
From there, the band playfully bounced back and forth through the song’s famously confident lyrics. Cuomo and Chili alternated lines singing through the song’s famous lines, “No, I don’t want no scrub / A scrub is a guy that can’t get no love from me / Hangin’ out the passenger side / Of his best friend’s ride.” It’s a straight out of left field collaboration, but TLC in their time was one of the most vital pop acts that the larger pop industry had at that moment (it’s easy to forget this was all happening in the middle of the original alternative music explosion).

Later on in their set Weezer also played their now infamous cover of “Africa” and then ended strong on their own early-career track “Say It Ain’t So.”
