Some British metal fans got a special treat when Kerrang! hosted a special show at Blondies in London featuring Mastodon with Scott Kelly of Neurosis. Only 50 fans were able to witness the short set, which featured several songs from the Mastodon catalog (no Neurosis songs though, sadly). Check out the pro-shot footage – and a lot of really crammed-in music fans – below:
The collaboration got started with a newer song, “Scorpion Breath” from 2017’s Emperor of Sand. Then they turned the dials way back with a cut from the band’s landmark breakthrough, Leviathan. Then came “Crack The Skye” from the band’s 2009 album of the same name, followed by “Diamond In The Witch House” from 2014’s Once More ‘Round The Sun. The penultimate song in the short set was “Crystal Skull” from their major label debut Blood Mountain. The set concluded with the band’s second song from Leviathan, “Blood and Thunder.”
Mastodon has most recently been in the news for tragic reasons. Their longtime manager Nick John lost his battle with pancreatic cancer in 2018. His illness and death led to the band cancelling their tour with indie rock band Dinosaur Jr. at the end of the year. They previously toured with Bay Area funk metal weirdos Primus.
Kelly is no stranger to sharing the stage with Mastodon. He performed with them in Berlin recently and has appeared on stage with them frequently throughout their career. He’s been open about his struggles with mental illness and recently cancelled some Psychic Warfare dates to focus on his mental health.
