BODY/HEAD, the experimental duo featuring Kim Gordon (CKM, Sonic Youth, Free Kitten, etc.) and Bill Nace (X.O.4, Vampire Belt, Ceylon Mange, etc.) will release their 3rd full-length record, The Switch, on July 13th via Matador Records. In advance of the album, the duo has released a new song in the form of “You Don’t Need.” As one would expect from the sonic pedigree of Gordon and Nace, the song is a distorted, noise-rock freakout, which makes use of plenty of gnarly feedback loops and harsh guitar distortion. The grinding textures give way ever so slightly so that Gordon’s voice can enter into the mix, spitting out some equally harsh and winding vocal lines. Eventually, the noise recedes, leaving just one single distorted feedback loop playing, with a twisted and dissonant melody barely breaking through the mix.
The previous two BODY/HEAD records, No Waves and Coming Apart were both triumphs of experimental music, and it looks like The Switch will be more of the same. Additionally, the duo has announced a run of tour dates across the US this summer.
After the breakup of the legendary Sonic Youth, Gordon has been active in a variety of different projects, such as BODY/HEAD and Glitterburst. She also recently appeared on the new record from Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks in the form of the song “Refute.”
