Performing in the El Rey theater just shy of her Coachella performance, Angel Olsen is ripe off touring her latest album Phases released in November of 2017. The album provides a dozen of Olsen’s demos, B-sides, and cover songs recorded over the past five years, all wrapped in feelings of love and loneliness with an ode to 1960’s Laurel Canyon singer-songwriterism, outlaw country, and even Bruce Springsteen. In album titled Phases, Angel Olsen shows immense maturity and self-awareness. Unlike her first three albums, Phases embraces a sense of unpolished in-between moments and rhythms that ultimately capture her sound and meaning more than a cohesive “perfect” album.
Olsen quotes on the album, “[I]t’s like a diary was stolen and mass produced…but that’s chill with me. I got nothing to hide.” With a playful tone of course, this ability to poke fun and release music with breaks and covers creates a sense of openness and trust with the listener mimicking the feeling of being in love itself. The album walks listeners through every emotion of being in a relationship, while providing a sense of vulnerability and rawness in discussing fascination, loneliness, and even anger.
Fans can trust that her performance will be just as stripped down, and open as the album itself – so don’t miss a night of intimate indie rock with Angel Olsen on April 17th 2018.
