Just shy of their Coachella performance St. Vincent first hits the Orpheum theater on April 11th. Annie Clark (St. Vincent) will be in the middle of her Fear the Future tour, likely performing many songs from their fifth studio album MASSEDUCTION. The album has been referred to as a confessional album addressing many of their widely publicized relationships with Cara Delavigne and Kristen Stewart. Their song Slow Disco features lyrics such as “Don’t it beat a slow dance to death,” said to be evoking a relationship that is trapped in a slow dance. A moment of intense romance and passion, but never building to anything more. This theme of anti-pop carries throughout the album as they incorporates upbeat tempos and dance rhythms – almost barrowing from 80’s pop but with an overlay of lyrics that speak of emptiness and conflict.
St. Vincent is sure to perform their single Los Angeles, a song most anyone living in the city can both relate and dance along to. The song’s main chorus uses an anaphora – repeating the phrase “How can anybody have you?” six times, each time shifting in meaning. The song deals with themes of desiring a relationship, fame, beauty, and success all in the city of angels. If you’re a local Angelino, or even a transplant MASSEDUCATION has themes we can all relate and connect to on a deep level – all while having a little fun. Don’t miss your chance to see St. Vincent at the Orpheum on April 11th!
